A Christmas Cake

Ingredients:
1  pound  Sugar
1  pound  Butter
1  pound  Citron
1  pound  Currants
2  pounds  Raisins, seeded
1 1/2  pounds  Flour
2/3  cup  Currant jelly
12    Eggs
1  teaspoon  Baking soda
1  teaspoon  Salt
1  dash  Cayenne
1  dash  Black pepper
1  cup  Molasses
1  teaspoon  Cinnamon
1    Nutmeg, grated
1/4  teaspoon  Cloves
2/3  teaspoon  Allspice

Directions:
A pound each of sugar, butter, citron and currants, two pounds of raisins seeded, one and a half pounds flour, two thirds of a cup of currant jelly, twelve eggs, a teaspoonful of soda and one of salt; a dash of cayenne and black pepper and a cupful of molasses. Divide the flour into two parts into one of which put a teaspoonful of cinnamon, a grated nutmeg, a quarter of a teaspoonful of cloves, and two thirds of a teaspoonful of allspice; with the other part mix fruit, cream the butter and sugar, and add the eggs well-beaten. Dissolve the soda in warm water and stir it into the molasses, mix well together and put in pans lined with buttered paper. Bake for two hours in a warm oven.
