Applesauce Christmas Cake

1/2  c  Shortening
1  ea  Egg
1  t  Soda
1  t  Baking powder
2  ts  Cinnamon, ground
2  ts  Nutmeg, ground
1  t  Vanilla extract
1/4  c  Walnuts, chopped
1  tb  Milk
1 1/2  c  Sugar, powdered
3/4  ts  Vanilla extract
1 3/4  c  Sugar
1 1/2  c  Applesauce
2 1/2  c  Flour, all-purpose
3/4  ts  Salt
1  t  Cloves, ground
2  tb  Molasses
1  c  Raisins
4  tb  Butter (or marg.)
1/4  c  Walnuts, chopped

Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg. Combine applesauce and soda; beat into creamed mixture. Combine flour, baking powder, salt, and spices; add to applesauce mixture. Stir in molasses, vanilla, raisins, and walnuts. Line the bottom of a 10" tube pan with waxed paper; grease and flour sides of pan. Spoon batter into pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 60 minutes. Let cool in pan 10 minutes; then remove cake from pan. When completely cool, spread top of cake with frosting. Frosting: Heat milk and butter in a saucepan until hot, but not boiling. Beat in sugar. Stir in walnuts and vanilla. Yield: about 1 cup.
