Jam Cake #2

1  cup  butter
2  cups  sugar
4    egg yolks
1 1/4  teaspoons  baking soda
1/2  cup  buttermilk
4  cups  flour
1  teaspoon  cloves
1  teaspoon  allspice
1  teaspoon  cinnamon
1  teaspoon  nutmeg
4    egg whites, beaten stiffly
2  cups  blackberry jam

Cream butter and sugar together; add yolks of eggs one at a time, and mix well. Put baking soda in milk, stir, and add to first mixture. Sift flour and spices together and add to mixture. Add the stiffly beaten egg whites, and lastly the jam. Mix well and bake in three layers in 9 inch layer pans. Bake in moderate hot oven, (375 degrees) for 35 minutes. Frost with Caramel Icing (or your favorite icing).
