Pitted dates,
chopped

Baking soda 1/2

Water,
boiling

c
Butter 1
c
Sugar 2
Eggs 2 1/2
c
Flour 1
t
Salt 1
t
Baking powder 1/2
c
Buttermilk 1
t
Vanilla extract 1

Orange zest,
heaping
1
c
Pecans,
chopped
-----TOPPING----- 1/2

Orange juice 1/4
c
Granulated sugar
Directions:
1. In a small bowl mix chopped dates and baking soda. Pour boiling
water over mixture and set aside.
2. In a large bowl of an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar until
smooth. Add eggs and beat until smooth and creamy.
3, In a medium bowl combine flour, salt and baking powder.
4, Alternate adding the flour mixture and the buttermilk in small
amounts to the creamed butter-egg mixture and beat until smooth.
5. Add vanilla, orange rind, pecans and reserved date mixture to the
batter. Mix until blended.
