Chocolate Pie With Meringue

1/4  c  hershey's cocoa
3/4  c  sugar
3  tb  cornstarch
1/4  t  salt
2  c  milk
2    egg yolks
1  tb  butter
1  t  vanilla
1  8"  baked pie shell
2    egg whites
1/4  t  cream of tartar
1/4  c  sugar
1/2  t  vanilla

Mix together cocoa, sugar, cornstarch and salt in a saucepan. Gradually stir in milk, mixing well until smooth. Cook over medium heat until filling thickens, stirring constantly. Boil 1 minute and remove from heat . Slowly stir about half the chocolate mixture into slightly beaten egg yolks. Then blend into hot mixture in saucepan. Boil 1 minute more, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and blend in butter and vanilla. Pour into baked pie shell and cover with meringue. MERINGUE: Beat egg whites with cream of tartar until foamy. Add 4 T. sugar gradually and beat until stiff peaks hold. Flavor with 1/2 t. vanilla. Pile onto pie and brown in hot oven (400 deg.) for 8-10 minutes. By KKBG35A RUTH BURKHAR
