Author/Submitted by: Karen Pattist
Servings: 96
Categories: Christmas / Cookies / Desserts / Holidays

Ingredients:
1/2  cup  butter
3/4  cup  packed dark brown sugar
1    egg
1/2  cup  molasses
1  tablespoon  hot water
2  teaspoons  anise extract
3 1/3  cups  flour
1/2  teaspoon  baking soda
1  teaspoon  cinnamon, or more to taste
1  teaspoon  cloves, or more to taste
1/4  teaspoon  salt
1/2  teaspoon  white pepper

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix butter, sugar, egg, molasses, anise extract, and water until very light and fluffy. Blend in flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, salt, and pepper. Shape level teaspoonfuls into balls. Bake 1 inch apart on ungreased sheet 12 mins, until golden brown on the bottom. I like to roll them in powdered sugar after they are cool. Store airtight, or for softer cookie, store with a slice of apple.
